Doctor Who 6.1 Questions, Questions, Questions

Well questions abound at the start of series 6. And as always forgive the bad grammar, bad spelling and bad structure. Oh and the wild speculation!

In random order…

Who sent the “Tardis Blue” envelopes?

Possibly answered. The Gang speculates that the “Future Doctor” sent the envelopes to summon them to investigate (prevent?) his death.

Who is in the spacesuit (and why kill The Doctor)?

Answered? We later see a young girl in the suit. Whether she is in the suit when the Doctor dies is unknown, but let’s talk about the girl.

In the second episode we are lead to believe that the girl is Amy’s daughter. So Amy tells the Doctor she’s pregnant, but when we meet up later she says she isn’t. No biggie. It happens. The Tardis scan cannot determine if she is pregnant. 6 months later (that’s a full 9 months for those keeping score) we see the girl outside of the suit in a NY back alley. She proclaims that she is dying but can fix herself. And holy crap it looks like she is regenerating.

We have never seen anyone pregnant in the Tardis. I would bet there would be consequences. I feel that at this point Amy thinks she isn’t pregnant.
Warning! Wild Speculation! Amy’s “child” was created by the Tardis as a means to reproduce. The Tardis is a living thing that deeply cares for the Doctor. Furthermore the child is/will be Professor Riversong. I think of it this way, how else could she know how to fly the Tardis better than the Doctor. She’s part Tardis and it used Amy to birth the offspring. Crazy I know but, this is Moffat and his complicated mind.

Who/What is The Silence?

Answered. The Silence. Aliens that have been here influencing the human race from the beginning. We obviously haven’t seen the last of them. They honor Amy for she will bring the Silence. The wounded one tells the Doctor that “Silence will fall”. And, why would they protect the child, possibly creating the suit for her.

And on a side note: there is much discussion on who the voice in the Tardis was last year. “Silence will fall.” Also responsible for hijacking the Tardis and blowing it up with River inside. Well I can think of only one being from the Whoniverse that would want to destroy all of creation. The Black Guardian.

Please feel free to discuss or call me an idiot

Doctor Who – 3 episodes in to the Matt Smith Era

Matt Smith has Arrived

Matt Smith. “What’s wrong with his face?!?” I hear some of you say. Okay, he looks a bit odd, no argument there. BUT compared to most Doctors, Tennant was always too pretty.

Acting wise, I like Smith better than Tennant. He has a much different style than we’ve seen before, Childlike exuberance with a wizened soul. Tennant was becoming a little too brooding and depressed for my tastes.

Most regenerations are drastic, with sweeping changes in personality. The Eccleston to Tennant change was subtle, and I believe that’s what most people expected. To be fair in the 1st episode you could still see some of Tennant’s attitudes and mannerisms. That disappeared later in the episode. More drastically, in Victory of the Daleks he wanted to destroy them once and for all, showing no reservations about committing genocide.

Amy Pond: a wonderful lass.

I think, by far, she is the prettiest companion yet. May be they were going for the Beauty and the Beast effect. BUT as I put looks aside for the Doctor, I shall do so for Amy.

Miss Pond is one of the smartest and most resourceful companions to date. Even Adric, Nyssa, and Victoria (from the classic series) relied on the Doctor to tell them what to do.

I only hold Romana higher but she was a Timelord after all.

In The Beast Below, Amy recognizes that the Star Whale was there by choice. It came to save the children from a dying Earth. It was old and the last of its race. Sound familiar? All the years of loneliness and pain just made it kind. She saw the same traits in the Doctor, and trusted her instincts about the creature. She freed the Star Whale from its torture, saving both the Whale and the humans. A solution the Doctor could not see.

In Victory of the Daleks, when the Doctor failed to “humanize” the android bomb by evoking painful memories, Amy succeed with evoking memories of a lost love. Once again she out thought the Doctor. We also learn that she may have some secrets, Why cant she remember the Daleks from before?.

And speaking of the Daleks, Thank you Mark Gatiss for bringing them back to stay!

You must be smoking CRACK

I’m speaking of course of the new season long plot. The crack in the skin of the world. We’ve seen it in every episode and it is linked to Amy. From the look on the Doctor’s face, it’s the reason the Doctor invited her to join him. Which also means he lied to her…interesting.

Okay that’s all for now. Next week River returns!!!

Observations after “Sundown”

Okay friends. After the events of “Sundown”, I think its time to review what we learned and I’ve observed so far this season.

  • Locke is Smokey. Actually it’s more like Smokey has chosen to take the form of Locke, and Locke is truly dead. Nice job of quickly taking Richard out of the equation.
  • The “sickness”, mentioned by Danielle Rousseau in season 1, is a darkness of the soul that represents Smokey’s influence. So far Sawyer, Sayid and Claire have been recruited or “claimed” by Smokey. And speaking of Claire…
  • Claire is the new Danielle. Claire is back. She’s been hiding in the jungle for 3 years, and she thinks the Others have taken her baby.
  • Smokey, in order to recruit Sawyer, showed him a cave with names and numbers written on the walls and ceiling. The names were preceded by numbers, most of which were crossed out. Sawyers name was there along with other survivors of flight 815. Smokey told Sawyer that these people were chosen by Jacob and that he affected their choices in life so that they all eventually ended up on the Island. This is why they, of all people, were on the island. What they assumed was choice was no choice at all. These chosen people were Candidates to be the new Jacob, the protector of the Island.
  • Jacob’s ghost led Hurley and Jack to the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse was a method that Jacob used guide prospective Candidates to the island. The focusing mirror is turned to a certain degree. That degree corresponds with a name, and allows the user to observe the Candidate off island. Jack turned the mirror to 23, his number, and saw his childhood home in the mirror. Of course Jack then threw a hissy fit and destroyed the mirrors.
  • So here’s what I’m thinking. The pilot of Oceanic 815 said that when the plane went down they were thousands of miles of course. I say the Lighthouse was used to pull the plane off course, and when it passed over the Island the electromagnetic pulse caused the crash. Also …
  • The mirror revealed the location where Sun and Jin were married and the church where the funeral for Sawyer’s parents was held. Those represent the moments that Jacob had contact with Sawyer, Sun and Jin. The lighthouse could act as a gateway for Jacob to leave the island and make physical contact with people.
  • And my guess at who is coming to the Island; Desmond, but more importantly Penny and baby Charlie. My gut tells me that all 3 will be important.

Okay, that’s all my brain has in it for now. I’ll return soon.

"We're not going to Guam are we."

-Frank Lupidus

Lost podcasts, both audio and video, are released on Itunes. The Audio podcasts feature executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff as they pre-hash the next episode and answer fan questions. Their answers to the fan questions are almost always hilarious and sometimes insightful. I’m going to start reviewing some of those answers for fans who miss out on these podcasts.

This first post will contain content from the first 3 audio podcasts for season 5. For a point of reference this brings us to episode 6 “316”.

· Someone asked for a translation of the hieroglyphs in the “Donkey Wheel” chamber. Damon explained that hieroglyphs cant be word for word translated because they are pictograms meant to convey concepts and ideas. He said the theme of the glyphs in that room was Resurrection.
· The place where “Smokey” dragged Montand and relived him of his arm was not the “Temple.” Consider it the outer wall of the grounds where the temple is. And we will definitely learn more about the temple.
· Montand was an inside joke. He was an aspiring concert violinist before he lost his arm. The Violin was his. Old Shtick: “Doctor, will he live? Yes, but he’ll never play the violin again.”
· Rose and Bernard did not die in the flaming arrow attack. You would have seen them die. But all of the other “Socks” died. “Socks” is the term they used for the other crash survivors that don’t have main stories. Niki and Paolo were the 2 biggest examples.
· The episodes “316” and “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” were written by Carlton and Damon at the same time. They could be watched in either order.

Well that’s all for today. I’ll try and watch the video podcasts and rehash them.
Till next time.

Lost episode 505 - This Place is Death

"I'm not aloud to have chocolate before dinner" - Charlotte

Why isn't Daniel getting nose bleeds? He has a constant, but Desmond isn't there.

"Say hello to my son" - Christian

Locke was supposed to turn the wheel. Sounds like this is all his fault. Nice that Locke makes the choice to fix the wheel and go back, knowing that he will need to die.

We finally see how Montand "lost his arm." Danielle's story is now complete.

We learned that Smokey guards the Temple. So what's in it. The temple that's covered in hieroglyphics. Confirmed by Damon Lindeloff in a season 4 DVD extra: They got an expert in hieroglyphics to construct them to convey very specific things. For example a large one on the door in Ben's house, when Ben released Smokey, meant "despair". They are supposed to be Egyptian, to add the thought that the island has been around for a very long time.

Till next week.

Lost episode 504 - The Little Prince

By now you should know that the title is a reference to a French novella titled The Little Prince .
Check it out.

We have yet to see what happens if the time-traveling survivors try to interact with their past selves. It's possible that they would be "out of phase" and just sound like...disembodied whispers?

John apparently told Jack that everybody on the island dies. Maybe the nose bleeds are the start of that.

And finally, for those that don't know, The side of Ben's van is an anagram for Reincarnation.

"Son of a Bitch!" - Sawyer

Lost episode 503 - Jughead

Jughead = the name of an H-bomb. That's just damn funny. Shades of the big season end reveal bring code-named "the frozen donkey wheel" and it actually being a frozen donkey wheel. Okay let's dive right in. My wife pointed out the Swan station had a section that was shielded in heavy concrete. Sayid found it and commented that it reminded him of Chernyobl (pardon the spelling). Maybe Dharma built the Swan where Jughead was buried. Electromagnetic field + Hydrogen Bomb = Implosion?

Eloise Hawkins is Daniel Faraday’s mother. Eloise Hawkins is the woman Desmond met in “Flashes Before Your Eyes.” She warned him that he couldn’t change the past. Eloise is also the name of Daniel’s lab rat. Naming your rat after your mom is a bit strange. Maybe they didn’t have a rosy relationship. AND Eloise Hawking, her name is likely a combination of George Ellis and Stephen Hawking, who together wrote The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime . Im no physicist, but it seems to me that the Power source near the Orchid could have been a Black hole. I go Wikipedia nuts sometimes and found some wacky stuff about Black holes and temporal radiation. Maybe the Swan had a small one, and Desmond imploded it. Phew! My head hurts, but wait there’s more!

We found out Daniel’s benefactor is Charles Widmore, once again confirming that everyone is connected. Oh yeah, and Charles Widmore was an Other, one that broke a cardinal rule. You don’t hurt your own people. He killed one, and was probably kicked off the island for it.

Now the paradox that is John Locke, being a fan of Dr Who, I just love this. Locke tells Richard to go and visit him when he’s born, and gives him the compass. Richard visits Locke because he told him to. Paradox. Just like the one Daniel was muttering about when Desmond came to see him in Oxford. Years later Richard sees Locke. He shows him several items and asks, “Which of these belongs to you?” One of the items is the compass which Locke gave to Richard, after Richard gave it to Locke. Paradox! Also,
John is their leader because Richard told him he was, because John told him he was. And so on and so on! Para-freakin-dox! So many shows that do time travel steer away from the, “I did it cause you told me to paradox,” but Lost embraces it.

And lastly, The revelation that Desmond and Penny named their child after Charlie, I’m sure brought many to tears.
